Some would say I've saved the best for last! When I came upon this website I figured this this would be one that most kids would click on at home, or if allowed to, choose it as a favorite in the classroom. First of all, the bright colors and animation blow you away immediately! Then when you see the 16 categories on page 1 and then 16 more on page 2 -- my goodness! A gamer's picnic! However, these are very appealing educational games that help build basic skills and take the student on to higher levels once he has mastered the current one. The variety is absolutely amazing! A child or student could spend hours exploring what this web page has to offer. A techno-buff's dream! There are also links to other gaming websites listed down the side of the webpage--which could be seen as a distraction or it could be viewed as another enhancement. Each of the 32 categories I clicked on took me deeper into even greater learning activities. It was the bomb diggity! In a classroom setting, access to this website would be a great supplemental aid for those needing more practice; at home, these educational games would be a welcomed substitute without losing any of its entertainment appeal.

This UK website is a very good resource that implements the use of pictures with words to support the National Literacy Strategy Framework for Teachers. Categories begin with Phonics Year 2, CVC Words, Consonant Clusters, Long Vowel Sounds, Frequency Words, Gallery, and Teachers and Parents. This last section includes some helpful printable resources for both teachers and parents. Moreover, the part that kids will like about clicking on the learning icons is that once they do they are in for a technological ride! Each learning icon is filled with activities and learning reinforcements that work by shockwave flash and realvideo technology. This makes for a more fun, adventurous, and spontaneous classroom session or even an anticipated supplememental exercise to work through at home. When placing this website on the computerized projector where all students can observe what's happening on the screen, it becomes a most helpful resource for teachers as an additional part of their completed lesson plans.

The colorful, animated moving graphics in front of me resemble a school hallway. I feel like I've just entered that school's main hallway while class changes are going on. However, I'm really just sitting here at my computer desk at home! Okay, the notes on the school lockers say I need to choose which grade level I want to begin with. I can tell I'm at Houghton Mifflin Reading which gives me three more options to my left. I can either click on Authors and Illustrators, Weekly Reader Articles, or I can choose Book Adventure. I choose Grade 1 and a Book comes up that is highly recommended, and I also get the option of clicking on eWord Game, eGlossary, or Web Field Trip. Very fun and educational activities beckon to me as I click on each one. This particular website works off of educational themes and is geared for elementary age students grade 1-6. Each Theme will give you a recommended book carried by Houghton Mifflin that reinforces the lesson plan. This web page is a great resource for teachers who want to teach their students how to critically think and make inferences in each story presented.

This colorful, graphic website is filled with many exciting options to choose from with about ten different icons to click on starting with the very first page. It is a helpful tool for grownups-- parents or caregivers-- to use in preparing young children for their upcoming years in school. They will love the engaging games and activities, streaming videos, and animated characters such as Rosa, Hooper, Dash -- and many more-- to help with each lesson being clicked on. There's Storybook Village, PBS Island, and many other places to go to learn additional reading and language arts skills. Included are teacher resources as well as a Child Progress Tracker that would be beneficial to both parents and teachers alike. This website would be a great online learning tool for children to access during classroom group learning time, and especially at home with a parent or caregiver working close beside them.

This website has been creatively put together by a teacher after a 30-year career teaching phonics. She then put all her ideas from her many years of experience and came up with a website that parents of homeschooled children and early learners can access to get a jumpstart on basic reading skills. With the use of online games and activities, homeschool products that are easy, fun, and exciting--kids stay interested and it probably feels more like entertainment than an actual educational session to them. Also offered is free online reading help for those who may need it. Animal characters were created to tell stories that teach practical lessons and to take them on different adventures. Afterwards, there are downloadable printed worksheets, games and puzzles to help reinforce each learning concept. Quick Start Reading makes available fun and interactive kits that can be purchased in order to work primarily offline or to complement particular lesson plans online. Parents should check out this site as a very resourceful tool to get their children who are under school age interested in learning the basics in an enjoyable way and also to help them build confidence as they persist in a home reading environment.

Internation Childrens Digital Library or ICDL, is a non-profit corporation that is providing a way to collect childrens literature from around the world by their creation of a website that includes and advocates literature of diverse cultures. One of the goals or mission of the organization is to make books available in various native tongues and have them readily available online for others who would like to access them. Some children and families would like to see more books on their own culture as well as the majority one. These families may have had to move around from country to country for many reasons, therefore, they've left behind books that were part of their family's heritage. Putting together this website was a way for the ICDL organization to create a priceless resource free of charge for them and many others like them. ICDL has founded seven different programs within their organization with all being tax deductible if you want to give or help in some way. I feel that anyone who reads for pleasure as well as teachers and librarians who promote reading in other ways, can pull up these digital books, place them on a computerized projector, and share them with other children and adults for their ultimate enjoyment and to also have them gain exposure to new languages.

This site is listed as a free public service to teach children how to read with phonics. A very exciting and well-developed educational website for preschool, kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, special education, homeschool, and ELD, ELL, and ESL guided levels. Also, navigation of online activities prove to be absolutely "kid- friendly." To begin with, there are four main categories : 1) ABC's 2) Learn to Read 3) It's Fun to Read 4) I'm Reading. In the first level, early learners are engaged in basic phonemic learning and as they progress and master those skills they advance to a higher level. Some of the categories they're introduced to are: About Me, Art Gallery, Magic, Music, Poetry, Tongue Twisters, Bird Riddles, etc. There are numerous practice activities within each of these categories that help reinforce rudimentary concepts contained in each one. As the child progresses to each new level there are new and different categories to be exposed to. For instance, under reading, the child will be exposed to different types of literature such as plays, fiction and nonfiction, comics, folk tales, Greek myths, and Chinese fables. Many more levels of learning and topics emerge as the student surpasses the previous level before. Imaginative, interactive, animated ways of teaching new concepts to each grade level are evident in each one. I feel parents, teachers, or other educators would be extremely enthusiastic about including this website as part of their supplemental curriculum. There is much to choose from that will enhance the current curriculum and prove to be even more fun and exciting for every student that gets to glean from it.

A very enjoyable read-along experience for adults and young children alike! This website is made possible by a waiver from the Screen Actors Guild and features SAG members reading different childrens books aloud. At the left of the screen are a list of story titles and when you move the mouse over the title it will give you the name of the actor/actress who'll be reading the story via streaming video. Each particular story has a complementary activities section as well as additional lesson ideas that are designed to enrich and enhance that particular story afterwards. A special online tool that both children and their parent(s) alike will enjoy at bedtime with the use of internet and a laptop! This website will surely enrich and enhance, in particular, any child's bedtime story expectations!

This fun and basic tutorial is a supplemental aid to help young learners to practice phonics in a class-room or even a
home-school environment. It is not meant to replace any comprehensive phonics programs school educators already have in place. This is an enjoyable and easy site for new readers, children or adults, and for parents and teachers, as well. Categories for additional practice include letters, consonants, vowels, y rules, blends, and common words. When you mix each of these categories in with some cartoons, sounds, audio narrations, and clickable words like what has already been done -- then learning becomes a very pleasant and anticipated daily adventure!

This site is a helpful resource to help empower parents of children with learning disabilities, and also as an aid in helping teachers recognize and identify early reading problems in their young students. Another advantage is that this website also helps students develop fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills by providing them with reading strategies, lesson plans, and activities that are devised to help them meet and exceed the project goals. Next, this website appears to be a helpful support system -- whether your child is taught to build literacy skills at school or at home. Many resources are included on the website such as fiction and nonfiction books, PBS videos and podcasts, blogs, newsletters, and tutoring suggestions. Furthermore, parents, teachers and other educators could benefit from the wealth of support and information that is provided here.

Oh my goodness! This website is so totally awesome in what it has to offer for age groups k-3 on many of its categories and especially k-12 for the majority of them. Although it is a subcribe and pay website, it is very affordable at $20 for 12 months for a household and $125 for a single school for a year. The benefits of having over 25,000 web pages to access for whatever your curriculum needs might be sounds incredibly delightful! In perusing the sample pages that are readily available, I was very impressed that this educational website uses a simple computer interface which is pretty "user friendly" for kids of all ages. And besides, kids nowadays just seem to instinctively know how to navigate and use the controls, anyway. Among the myriad of choices of categories, there is one that stood out the most to me which is, TapQuiz Maps--an iPhone as well as an iPad application. What an excellent way to learn Geography in today's world, by incorporating different kinds of media and technology into the child's learning experience. This website was designed to compel children of all ages to use their imaginations; push their creativity to the limit, and find learning to be a pleasurable experience. In addition to that, it appears to be an incredible resource for school libraries to have available for educators in their particular school. What a smorgasbord of supplemental material to use for most of their educational needs!

This free website is one that you subscribe to by typing in your email address and following it up with a member login password of sorts. The site was put up to help kids to stretch and grow while being entertained by the fantastic audio stories. Many compliments to the narrator for using a professional touch to his voice -- there have been many raves about the preciseness and enunciation of his words--especially by those taking up ESL. Also available on the site are brainteasers, games, puzzles, quizzes, and some links to outside resources. The stories have been written and are read with much attention to detail and sensory perception. Blind children really love this aspect of the stories that have been placed on the site.

This useful and fun website is praiseworthy for its simplicity and easy navigation to other categories of interest for the students. Educators and parents alike find this site highly recommendable because of its no-fault way of teaching early reading skills. In fact, many of them are saying their students are so engaged in the various interactive activities that they forget they are in a learning environment. It feels like play to them. Besides the multitude of interactive reading games, guided reading stories, literacy worksheets to practice with, songs, and reading software to choose from, most educators are saying it is the high-interest stories that are helping the students to think on a higher level, teaching them to make predictions or inferences within each story they hear or read. This RTZ website has characters that weave magic around a child's heart and has them deeply involved in lesson plans that are being utilized without them ever really noticing it. Parents and teachers like the fact there is a literacy store listed on the website where both can acquire other good quality resources for use during leisure time at school and in the home.

This free interactive website has activities for babies such as lullabies and is incredibly cute and interactive for early learners from toddlers to preschoolers. It even has a category for grown-ups, while giving them articles and advice to help them, become encouragers to all children and to promote the joy of reading all around. An anacronym for this website is RIF meaning Reading is Fundamental.
Besides interactive activities such as reading, singing, fingerplay, doodling, and exploring, there are adorable and playful characters that help guide the child through each step of the chosen exercise. This site helps both parent and teachers to inspire these young ones with age-appropriate material that will be a foundation to build on as they gain further knowledge to exceed each level. It appears the purpose of this site is the importance of having basic reading and language arts being taught to children very early on and allowing it to become a springboard for developing greater reading, writing, communication and critical thinking skills in today's ever-increasing techno-literate classrooms.

Although this is a subscription required website for both parents and educators, it does have much to offer early elementary students as far as variety and interaction is concerned. There are over 600 activities available for students to choose from and it has proven to be a great resource for special education needs as well as E.S.L. (English as Second Language). New monthly activities are added in the categories of animated songbook, story songs, and interactive activities. This cool and exciting website is packed with a plethora of things to do. Within each activity section, the students will enjoy interacting in the categories of: arts and music, museum, poets, games, puzzles, and lesson plans. This very animated, colorful, educational site is a welcome resource for both teachers and parents alike as endless fun is injected into the learning process of early elementary students. The website is invaluable as an additional resource in meeting some of the students' more comprehensive educational needs. Website #1
http://www.literactive.com/
An excellent teaching resource for both teachers and parents that is free. However, you will need to register in order to participate in what the site has to offer. You will find reading material that is level guided for pre-school, kindergarten and also grade 1 students. Parents, especially, like Literactive as an online learning tool as it helps them take their early learner on an interactive journey on The Road to Reading. In addition to that, teachers find a huge amount of learning activities at their disposal to download and print for extra practice, in individual or whole classroom settings. Equally important, is the inclusion of a Spanish version of the guided readers for those who use it as their primary language.
I believe this website could be one of the most popular ones used by teachers as is it especially helpful in exposing small class groups around the computer to interactive poetry, electronic picture books of traditional stories, and because of all the downloadable worksheets and activities that are available for students needing material in specific areas of concentration. The website's main goal is to provide both teachers and parents with a helpful place to search for additional teaching tools in a variety of available material that grabs the attention and engages the minds of students working alone or in small classroom groups.
